Understanding Chiffon, Organza, Silk and Khaddar

Published

Pakistani wardrobes use many fabrics, and the names can be confusing. Here is a quick, plain-language guide to four of the most common.

Chiffon

Chiffon is a very light, sheer fabric with a soft, flowing drape. It can be made from silk or from synthetic fibres such as polyester. It is popular for dupattas and party wear. It can snag easily, so handle it gently.

Organza

Organza is sheer like chiffon but crisp and stiff. It holds shapes well, which is why it is used for sleeves, borders and dupattas with structure. Like chiffon, it can be silk or synthetic.

Silk

Silk is a natural fibre produced by silkworms. It has a gentle natural sheen, feels smooth and breathes well. Real silk usually needs more careful washing than cotton, so follow the care instructions.

Khaddar

Khaddar is a thicker, textured cotton cloth that has long been part of South Asian clothing. It is warm and hard-wearing, which makes it a favourite for winter suits.

Quick comparison

  • Chiffon: light, flowing, formal.
  • Organza: light, crisp, structured.
  • Silk: smooth, natural, elegant.
  • Khaddar: thick, warm, everyday winter wear.

Mixing fabrics

Many suits pair a cotton or lawn shirt with a chiffon or organza dupatta. That is a great way to get comfort and elegance together.
