Lawn vs. Cotton: Understanding the Difference
In Pakistani markets, “lawn” and “cotton” are often listed as two separate choices. In reality, cotton is the fibre and lawn is a type of fabric that is most often woven from it. What shoppers usually mean is: a very light summer fabric versus a slightly heavier everyday fabric.
What is lawn?
Lawn is a lightweight, finely woven fabric. It feels smooth, drapes softly and is slightly sheer in lighter colours. It is popular for summer suits and printed collections.
What do people mean by “cotton”?
When a suit is sold simply as “cotton”, it is usually a heavier or more textured cloth than lawn. It feels sturdier, is more opaque and often suits the cooler months or everyday office wear.
Side-by-side
- Weight: lawn is lighter; plain cotton is usually a little heavier.
- Feel: lawn is smooth and airy; cotton is softer and more substantial.
- Opacity: lawn can be slightly see-through, so a lining or darker inner often helps.
- Best season: lawn for peak summer; cotton for spring, autumn and mild winters.
- Creasing: both crease; lawn tends to crush more easily, so press it before wearing.
Which should you choose?
For hot and humid cities
If you live somewhere like Karachi or Hyderabad, where summers are warm and humid, a light breathable fabric is usually the most comfortable.
For all-day wear
If you want something sturdier that holds its shape through a long day, a cotton with a little more body can be a better fit.
