How to Identify Good-Quality Lawn Fabric

Published

Lawn is a light, fine fabric that is usually made from cotton or a cotton blend. It is the go-to choice for hot Pakistani summers, but quality varies a lot from one lawn to another. These six quick checks help you decide before you buy.

What makes lawn “good”?

Good lawn is fine and soft, breathes well and keeps its shape after washing. It should feel light without being see-through, and the print should look crisp rather than blurry.

Six simple checks

1. Hold it up to the light

Look at the weave. In good lawn the threads look even and closely spaced. Big gaps, thick patches or uneven lines are signs of a weaker cloth.

2. Feel the fabric

Rub it between your fingers. It should feel smooth and soft, not rough, stiff or papery. A stiff feel often comes from heavy starch that disappears after the first wash.

3. Study the print

Edges of motifs should be sharp and the colours should look the same across the whole length. Check the back of the fabric too: on better prints the colour has gone through the cloth instead of sitting only on the surface.

4. Look at the finish

Run your hand across the surface. Lots of loose fibres or fuzz can mean the fabric will pill quickly.

5. Test colour safety

If you can, rub a corner with a damp white cloth. Colour on the cloth suggests the dye may bleed in the wash. When in doubt, wash dark and light colours separately.

6. Ask what it is made of

A trustworthy seller can tell you the fabric type and composition. If a description does not mention it, ask before you order.

Look for close-up photos that show the weave and print, a clear fabric description and honest colour notes. Screens differ, so colours can look slightly different in real life.
